We were asked to extend the life of this roof on a Homebase store
We applied Rust-Oleum Noxyde and gave the customer a 10 Year Warranty backed by Rust-oleum
Before anyone opens a bucket:
Identify the roof type (metal, concrete, fiber cement, etc.). Noxyde is most commonly used on metal roofs.
Check for active leaks, corrosion, loose fasteners, damaged sheets, or failed seams.
Measure the area to calculate material needs (Noxyde is usually applied in two coats).
👉 Any structural issues must be fixed first—Noxyde is a coating, not a structural repair.
This is where most failures happen if rushed.
Remove dust, dirt, oils, bird droppings, and old flaking coatings.
Use high-pressure water washing (often 2,000–3,000 psi).
Let the roof dry completely—no trapped moisture.
Remove loose rust and mill scale using wire brushing, scraping, or mechanical abrasion.
Heavy rust may need power tooling.
Noxyde can go over sound rust, but loose rust must go.
Tighten or replace loose screws and fasteners.
Seal:
Seams and laps
Penetrations (vents, skylights, pipes)
Cracks or pinholes
Often done with a reinforcing fabric or mesh embedded in Noxyde or a compatible sealant.
Some substrates or heavily rusted areas may require a Rust-Oleum primer.
Many metal roofs don’t need a primer if properly cleaned, but:
Bare steel
Severe corrosion
Non-metal surfaces
…may benefit from priming. Always follow the product data sheet for your situation.
Apply in dry weather only.
Surface temperature typically above 5°C (41°F).
No rain expected during curing.
Avoid application in very high humidity or direct extreme heat.
Airless spray (most common on industrial roofs)
Roller or brush for smaller areas and details
Apply two coats for proper waterproofing and elasticity.
First coat:
Apply evenly, working into seams and fasteners.
Allow to dry (often 8–24 hours, depending on conditions).
Second coat:
Apply perpendicular to the first coat when possible.
Target thickness is important—too thin reduces performance.
Noxyde is water-based, so it dries by evaporation.
Full cure can take several days.
Protect the roof from:
Rain before skin-over
Heavy foot traffic during curing
Once cured, the coating forms a seamless, flexible, waterproof membrane that can handle expansion and contraction.
Check for missed spots, thin areas, or pinholes.
Touch up as needed.
Periodic inspections (annually or after storms) help extend service life.
High elasticity (moves with the roof)
